Law and Citizenship Curriculum

BCCitizenship.ca details a new approach for teaching law and citizenship in BC. The project is the result of a unanimous endorsement by the Law and Citizenship Project Committee to enhance the present BC social studies curriculum on law and citizenship.

The strategy will educate students on their important role as citizens by providing them with knowledge and understanding of the structure and operation of Canada's and BC’s political and justice systems. It is designed to give students the tools and confidence to embrace active participation in the life of their community.

In 2007, the Ministry of Education conducted a Needs Assessment for Grades 8-12 Social Studies Curriculum. The summary report identified issues such as citizenship (and law), with a recommendation that these be addressed more fully in the curriculum.

The Committee began its work by undertaking a grade-by-grade analysis of the existing social studies curriculum for grades 7 through 11 (including a review of Civic Studies 11 and BC First Nations Studies 12). Areas where enhancements could be made to material on law and citizenship were identified.

As the project continues, updates will be posted on BCCitizenship.ca.
