THE ROLE

JES provides multilingual legal help to British Columbians with limited English skills, in order to help them address their legal needs. The Legal Navigator will provide services in Chinese to clients.  

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Meeting with clients in-person and digitally to provide legal information and education.
  • Informing and educating clients about the justice system: explaining court documents, legal terminology, and court procedures to help clients better understand their legal rights, options, and next steps.
  • Work on our digital platforms to respond to clients, work with external team members and manage client lists.
  • Referring clients to governmental and non-governmental agencies so that they may receive additional support and/or specialized services – e.g. – legal aid qualification, family justice counsellor appointment, alcohol, and drug counselling, etc.
  • Working with community organizations and JES staff to coordinate and deliver educational webinars and workshops to settlement workers, intermediaries, and the public.
  • Help promote JES legal help services and resources.
  • Provide monthly statistical reports.

Other work-related duties as assigned.

THE PERSON

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • 1 to 3 years of related experience, including experience with the BC justice system.
  • Oral and written fluency in English.
  • Strong command of Mandarin and/or Cantonese.
  • Experience working and managing clients with empathy and professionalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze/assess clients’ problems and provide legal information and referrals based on client’s needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively liaise with community agencies and other organizations.
  • Strong technical skills working with MS Office and Teams, G-Suite, Zoom, online chat software, etc.
  • Experience delivering online webinars and conduction online meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Education

  • Diploma in a related discipline such as legal studies.
