The Justice Education Society of British Columbia (JES) is a non-profit organization with over 36 years of experience providing public legal education and justice system capacity building in Canada and overseas. In Canada, JES helps more than 700,000 British Columbians learn about our justice system and address their legal issues.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a Public Legal Educator to deliver engaging and meaningful legal education sessions for diverse audiences, with a focus on youth, immigrants and newcomers. The Public Legal Educator helps people better understand their rights and the justice system that affects their daily lives. This work will involve guiding students and community groups through interactive experiences designed to increase their legal capability and deepen their understanding of the justice system. These sessions often include observing live trials, connecting with justice professionals, and engaging in inquiry-based learning that makes the legal system approachable and relevant. Also working in partnership with community organizations, this program delivers plain language legal education on topics such as the Canadian justice system, employment, tenancy, discrimination, parenting responsibilities, family law, wills and estates, and human rights.

 

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY 

Ask JES Multilingual Program

  • Facilitate in-person and online legal education workshops for immigrants, refugees, and multilingual communities.
     
  • Work with community and settlement organizations to deliver impactful workshops on topics such as:
     
    • Canadian justice system basics
       
    • Employment, tenancy, and discrimination
       
    • Parenting responsibilities and family law
       
    • Wills and estates
       
    • Human rights
       
  • Deliver content in plain language with cultural awareness and empathy.
     

Justice System Education Program 

  • Facilitate sessions for students to deepen their understanding of the justice system.
     
  • Coordinate and organize group courthouse visits (liaising with teachers, court staff and legal professionals)
     
  • Support participants in building legal capability and confidence through interactive, experiential learning.

 

THE PERSON

Education/Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Degree/experience in education, law, legal studies or similar.

  • 3+ years experience facilitating or teaching, with experience engaging diverse audiences.

  • 3+ years teaching or engaging with youth.

  • Knowledge of legal issues affecting immigrants, refugees, youth, and other equity-seeking groups

  • Ability to explain complex legal concepts in plain language.

  • Fluent in a second language preferred (especially those with fluent Spanish, Mandarin or Farsi).

  • Experience applying a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approach in communication or service delivery.

  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of the BC legal system.

  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office/365 and Google Workspace applications.
